‘pennies for the ferryman’

all is a journey
all come to pass
the river is vast, deep and wide
more like an ocean, with its own tide
trepidation overtakes
expectation roundly wakes
as though life’s loss weren’t enough
one must yet pay the fare
for the wizened old man
and safe passage there
that destination open to one and to all
from moments ago right back to the fall
every journey must come to an end
yet somehow the circle forever extends

the journey is long
from life into the unknown
all must pay the fare

[this piece was written as an accompaniment to my – currently dormant – musical project of the same name, specifically a self-titled release, which can be found here]
