‘the scars of denial’

one insists on putting off the inevitable
the other making overtures
of permanence to the temporal
all the while they deny
deny themselves and each other happiness life and love
in some strange ritual of self-flagellation
a punishment without a crime
they say there’s always time
and that wounds heal
maybe they will
but the scars are already forming
mutual self-destruction all too real
